Source: idealista/news, rental price report, 1 October 2026 · checked 7 Oct 2026

A single person renting a 60 m² flat in Barcelona needs about €2,075 a month, and a couple renting 80 m² needs about €3,345, using September 2026 asking rents and what INE says residents of Cataluña spend. Rent is €1,206 of the single budget and €1,608 of the couple budget.

The rent figure is idealista’s September 2026 asking rent for Barcelona city: €20.1 per m² a month, second-highest among Spanish provincial capitals after Madrid. Barcelona is also one of the few large capitals where idealista’s report shows asking rents lower than a year earlier. Spending is from the INE Household Budget Survey 2025, which publishes by region, so it is the Cataluña average, not a Barcelona city figure.

Rent in Barcelona

Asking rent is the price on current listings; it is what a newcomer faces and usually sits above what existing tenants pay. Flat size sets the bill:

Flat size Calculation Monthly rent
50 m² 50 × €20.1 €1,005
60 m² 60 × €20.1 €1,206
70 m² 70 × €20.1 €1,407
80 m² 80 × €20.1 €1,608

Barcelona asks €3.3 per m² less than Madrid (€20.1 against €23.4), which is €198 a month on a 60 m² flat (€1,404 minus €1,206). It asks €3.8 more than Valencia (€16.3), or €228 a month on 60 m² (€1,206 minus €978), and €6.2 more than Alicante (€13.9). Against the national figure of €15.1, Barcelona is about 33% higher.

Everyday spending

INE reports spending per person in Cataluña in 2025, housing costs removed, utilities kept in:

Per person A year A month
Food (groceries) €2,339 €195
Transport €1,700 €142
Utilities (water, electricity, gas) €678 €56
Leisure (recreation, culture, restaurants, hotels) €1,923 €160
Other (clothing, health, communications, education, insurance, personal care) €3,784 €315
Total €10,424 €869

Monthly rows are rounded and can differ from the total by €1. Cataluña has the highest food spending (€2,339 a year) and utilities (€678) of the regions in our dataset, while its leisure spending (€1,923) is well below Madrid’s (€2,382). Overall, everyday spending is €41 a month below Madrid (€869 against €910) and €42 above the Comunitat Valenciana (€827).

Monthly budget: single person and couple

The single person rents 60 m². The couple rents 80 m² and spends twice the per-person average.

Monthly Single (60 m²) Couple (80 m²)
Rent €1,206 €1,608
Food €195 €390
Transport €142 €283
Utilities €56 €113
Leisure €160 €320
Other €315 €631
Total €2,075 €3,345
Total per year €24,900 €40,140

Rent is 58% of the single budget (€1,206 of €2,075) and 48% of the couple budget (€1,608 of €3,345). Not included: income tax, a private health policy, buying a car and one-off costs such as the deposit. The couple column assumes two people use twice the average utilities, which overstates a shared home slightly. If you plan to look for a flat as a foreigner, read renting in Spain as a foreigner.

Budget versus visa income requirements

Monthly Budget in Barcelona Non-lucrative visa Digital nomad visa
Single €2,075 €2,400 €2,442 (safe: €2,849)
Couple €3,345 €3,000 €3,358 (safe: €3,918)

The non-lucrative visa requires 400% of the IPREM for the applicant (€2,400 a month) and 100% (€600) per family member, so €3,000 for a couple. The digital nomad visa asks for €2,442 for one person and €3,358 for a couple as the Washington consulate counts it, or €2,849 and €3,918 to be safe (the digital nomad guide explains the two readings).

A single person’s Barcelona budget (€2,075) is €325 below the non-lucrative requirement and €774 below the digital nomad one. A couple’s budget (€3,345) is €345 above the non-lucrative minimum and €572 below the digital nomad minimum. So a couple living on the non-lucrative visa’s minimum income would fall short of an average Barcelona budget, and a couple on the digital nomad minimum would cover it with €572 to spare.

What can move your number

  • Flat size and area. The €20.1 is a city figure. Each extra 10 m² adds €201 a month.
  • Sharing. Two flatmates splitting a 70 m² flat (€1,407) pay €703.50 each.
  • Spending profile. INE averages blend all ages and household types, so your own pattern may differ.
  • Regional, not city, spending. The Cataluña average covers the whole region, not only Barcelona.
