Your US or UK driver’s license is valid in Spain for a maximum of six months from the day you take up normal residence. After that you must exchange it for a Spanish license, or take the Spanish driving tests. The UK has an exchange agreement with Spain, so a UK license can be swapped for a Spanish one without an exam. The DGT’s list has no US state on it, so US license holders have to pass the Spanish tests.

The six-month rule

The DGT, Spain’s traffic authority, says licenses from outside the EU and EEA are valid only while you meet three conditions:

  1. No more than six months have passed since you acquired normal residence in Spain.
  2. The license is in force.
  3. You are old enough to hold the equivalent Spanish license.

The rule applies to licenses written in Spanish or with an official translation, and to licenses issued under the Geneva Convention (annex 9) or the Vienna Convention (annex 6) models. After the six months, the DGT says these licenses are not valid to drive in Spain. To keep driving you must exchange the license, or, if that is not possible because there is no agreement with your country, get a new Spanish license.

The DGT’s wording is “since you acquired normal residence in Spain”, and its page does not spell out which document or date marks that moment. Treat your arrival as settled resident, not tourist, as the starting point and plan around it. Your padron registration and the moving checklist cover the other early steps.

Can you exchange a UK license?

Yes. The DGT’s list of countries with an exchange agreement includes the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, with the agreement in force from 16 March 2023. For a motorcycle or car license the table lists no tests and a fee code of II.3, which it shows as €28.87.

You also need:

  • to be a resident of Spain (the exchange is for residents),
  • a valid license, which you hand over to the DGT (the original is always surrendered), and
  • to have obtained the license before becoming resident in Spain.

The DGT says that licenses obtained after the agreement was signed are not exchangeable if you were already a legal resident of Spain when you got them. Licenses that include lorry or bus categories usually need extra tests, according to the DGT.

An exchange converts all the categories on your license at once. If you hold car and motorcycle categories, you get both on the Spanish card. The detailed document list is chosen by country in the DGT’s online tool, so check it for the UK before you book. Check the UK entry before booking, because the document list can change.

What about US licenses?

The DGT’s table of exchange agreements does not include the United States. The list covers Argentina, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland, Turkey and Uruguay, for instance, but no US state appears. The DGT’s exchange page adds that if your license comes from a country outside the EU/EEA that is not Andorra, Switzerland or Monaco and is not in the agreement list, it cannot be exchanged and you must get a new license.

That means US residents take the Spanish tests. The DGT says getting a new license requires a theory exam and a practical exam, and sometimes a closed-track maneuvers test. The usual route is a driving school (autoescuela), though you can also sit the theory test on your own. Practice theory tests are free on the DGT site.

One general condition from the DGT is that you must reside in Spain to sit the tests. A non-EU student must show at least six continuous months of residence.

International Driving Permit

For people from outside the EU and EEA, the DGT advises getting the International Driving Permit in your home country before coming. It is valid for one year, is a complement to your own license, and must always be carried with your passport and your original license.

The IDP does not extend the six-month rule. The DGT page that sets out the rule treats the IDP and the six-month validity as separate options. After you become resident, the exchange or the new Spanish license is what counts.

A timeline that works

  • Before leaving: check your license is in force (the DGT requires it) and, if you want one, get the IDP at home.
  • Month 1 to 2: register your address and get your residence documents. Check the DGT’s country tool for your license.
  • UK holders: book the exchange appointment early, since you hand your license over and lose it at that point.
  • US holders: enroll in an autoescuela early enough to finish the theory and practical tests inside the six months.

The practical risk is driving after month six with a foreign license. The DGT says a foreign license is not valid for driving in Spain after that period. Residence also has tax consequences with their own dates; see Spanish tax residency.
